What is Car Part Exchange?
Also known as 'trading in' your car, part exchange is where you offer your outgoing vehicle as a partial payment towards a new car.
There are usually two key reasons to part exchange a car:
- Easily move on your outgoing car
- Save money on the vehicle replacing it
The part exchange process
Get an initial valuation: you can typically request an initial part exchange valuation on your car - our online form will give you exactly that - this will return a valuation that gives you an idea of what your car is worth.
Start to look at new cars: with an estimate of what your car is worth, you can then go about looking at what might replace it, knowing that your part exchange will help you save money off its cost.
In-person appraisal: it is important for someone at a dealership to see the car in person and get more details on the vehicle's history before giving a final part exchange valuation - ideally you'll do this at a dealer where you've seen a car of interest you'd to buy as a replacement.
Agree a deal for the new car: with the final part exchange valuation in hand, and after finding a new car that's perfect for you, both you and the dealer can then start putting the deal together.
Complete the paperwork and drive away: finalise the paperwork, including the V5C document for your old car to transfer its ownership to the dealer - once all is complete, and you've insured your new car, you can drive away.
Part Exchange Example
You are looking to buy a car for £20,000 - and your old car has been valued at £5,000.
Through the process of part exchange, the £5,000 trade-in value is taken off the £20,000 to leave you with an overall cost of £15,000 for the new car.
N.B This scenario is only viable if your car is completely paid off and there's no outstanding finance.

Condition

Mileage
The more miles you do, the less your car tends to be worth, as the parts and components will be closer to the time they need replacing.
If you’re a high-mileage driver, then it’s probably worth accepting that, when it’s time to part exchanging, your car might be very well affected in terms of its value.
If you only drive when you need to, and are conscious about how many miles you do in general, then this will likely benefit you when it comes to trading in your vehicle.
Age
This is one that you technically don’t have control over - the older your car gets, the more its part exchange value will decrease, as a car’s worth naturally depreciates over time.
When it comes to the age of your car, you can look at it in one of two ways:
- Not worry about this as a factor, and focus on other aspects you have more control over
- Have a plan to trade it in after a certain number of years before it loses too much value
Previous Owners
How many people have owned the car in the past can also be a pertinent factor in how much a car is worth.
The fewer owners a car has had can usually lead to the car being in better condition, as well as having the likes of all its keys and documentation in place - giving it a higher valuation as a result.
Service History
If you’re ever one to find getting your car serviced a nuisance, keep in mind that, while servicing not only helps your car run smoothly, it will also help boost its value come trading it in.
