Suzuki Motor Corporation has introduced its first mass-produced battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA, in Milan, Italy. Production is set to begin in spring 2025 at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India, with sales planned for summer 2025 in markets including Europe, India, and Japan.
The e VITARA is inspired by the eVX concept model, which debuted at the Auto Expo in India in January 2023 and was later showcased at the JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW in October. It represents Suzuki’s first global strategic BEV.
Designed as an “Emotional Versatile Cruiser,” the e VITARA combines advanced technology with rugged aesthetics. It features a nimble BEV powertrain for a sharp driving experience, an ALLGRIP-e electric 4WD system offering robust off-road capability, and a newly developed BEV-specific platform, HEARTECT-e.
The e VITARA’s design theme, High-Tech & Adventure, captures the modern appeal of a BEV alongside the rugged essence of an SUV, evoking a sense of adventure. The exterior is striking, featuring large-diameter tyres and an extended wheelbase for a powerful stance. Inside, the integrated display is paired with advanced features, durable-looking panels, and a robust centre console, all reflecting the High-Tech & Adventure theme.
The e VITARA’s powertrain combines the efficient eAxle, integrating both motor and inverter, with a lithium iron-phosphate battery that prioritises safety and reliability. This setup enables quick acceleration from a standstill and smooth, responsive power delivery for overtaking across various speeds.
The ALLGRIP-e electric 4WD system leverages Suzuki’s expertise in four-wheel drive with two independent eAxles—one at the front and one at the rear. This setup delivers robust performance and precise, responsive handling.
A Trail mode enhances off-road capability, using a limited-slip differential (LSD) function to brake spinning wheels and redirect torque to the opposite wheel for seamless handling on rugged terrain.
The newly developed HEARTECT-e platform is tailored specifically for BEVs, offering a lightweight structure, high-voltage safety, and maximised interior space thanks to shorter overhangs. The main floor is designed without underfloor members, allowing for a larger battery capacity and a spacious cabin.
The e VITARA is our first BEV, developed through repeated trial and error to create an easy-to-use BEV for our customers. In order to realise a carbon- neutral society, we will provide a variety of options, including BEVs, hybrid vehicles, and CNG vehicles, tailored to specific regions. Introduction of the e VITARA represents a significant milestone in achieving carbon neutrality. Following the launch of the e VITARA, we will continue to expand our BEV line- up and propose mobility solutions tailored to the needs of specific countries and regions.
