When choosing the most reliable used car, budget is one of the most important aspects to consider. Another significant factor is durability. Your car is a vital part of your lifestyle, be it commuting to work or taking the kids to school – you don’t want to be stuck at the side of the road in a cloud of smoke.

According to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), in 2019 used car sales in the UK surpassed new by 3.8 million.

Let’s check the statistics to see which cars made it to the top 10.

Here are the ten best-selling used cars of 2019:

Now that’s we’ve covered used car statistics, let’s get into the most important question of all:

How do you choose a reliable used car?

If reliability and durability are truly important factors when purchasing a used car, then think long-term when buying a car and research manufacturers reputation, the quality of their materials and history of reliable engine parts etc.

It is also essential to check the used car’s service history to make sure it doesn’t have serious faults that will cost extra money down the road. Additionally, check the safety ratings from Euro NCAP or other accredited organisations when buying a used car.

Next, think about what type of car would fit your lifestyle. Those with big families would most likely need a spacious SUV; meanwhile, eco-conscious people should consider the growing list of AV options, such as hybrids and all-electric vehicles.

You should also consider timing. If purchasing from dealerships, keep an eye out for quarterly sales when the stock is rotating. It’s possible to find good used car deals and attractive financial options during that time.

If you’re buying privately and don’t know much about cars, hiring a specialist to inspect the car and test-drive it can also help bring peace of mind to the purchase (and possibly save you money in the long-term).

Meanwhile, for some extra guidance, What Car? published annual reliability survey statistics (based on their own Reliability Survey) at the end of 2019. The result are as follows:
