At Stoneacre, we proudly announce that we have added KGM Motors to our line-up of amazing car manufacturers. So, to celebrate their 70th anniversary, we are taking a look back on their journey to the company that they are today.
From its modest origins, the company has grown into a global force, captivating drivers with a unique blend of style, performance, and reliability.
KGM Motors UK’s history is a testament to its resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional vehicles.
KGM’s seven-decade history is marked by innovation and progress. Founded in 1954, KGM Motors started out at the Ha Dong Hwan Motor workshop – producing trucks, buses and special-purpose vehicles (mainly for exports).
By the 1970s, KGM had established itself as a domestic market leader. Ha Dong Hwan Motors co-founded Shinjin Jeep to create hard and soft-top Jeeps. Subsequently, the company changed its name to Dong A Motor Co Ltd.
The 1980s marked a period of expansion, as the company ventured into international markets. The currently-known company Geohwa underwent a significant transformation with its rebranding as SsangYong Motor, signalling a new era of growth and ambition. This also produced new names for the cars the company was producing under the SsangYong name.
SsangYong Motors significantly expanded in the 1990s, partnering with Mercedes Benz to develop technology-driven products. More significantly SsangYong entered the UK market – coming in with the Musso SUV (the first vehicle with used Mercedes technology) and the Korando 2 which offered several engine options for customers. Towards the latter end of the 1990s, Daewoo bought a large stake in SsangYong in 1997, and vehicles like the Korando were sold under the Daewoo name until 2001.
During the 2000s and 2010s, the company saw many introductions to new cars, such as the first-generation Rexton, the large 7 seat MPV Rodius and not to forget the launch of the Tivoli in 2015.
The rebranding to KGM Motors UK in 2024 marked a pivotal moment, signalling a departure from the past and a commitment to a future defined by innovation, sustainability, and customer-centricity. Emerging from 70 years of challenges, KGM has entered the 2020s with renewed vigour, committed to shaping the future of mobility.
KGM Cars is more than just a new name; it signifies a bold step forward for a company with a rich heritage.
The rebrand signified a fundamental shift in the company’s identity and aspirations. The new name, KGM, embodies a fresh and modern image, aligning with the brand’s vision to become a leader in the evolving automotive landscape.
A key element of the rebrand was the introduction of a new slogan, “Go Different, KGM.” This tagline encapsulates the brand’s determination to challenge the status quo and offer customers unique and compelling driving experiences. By emphasising differentiation, KGM aims to stand out in a crowded marketplace and attract a new generation of car buyers.
The rebranding process involved a comprehensive overhaul of the company’s visual identity, including a new logo, website, and dealership design. The goal was to create a compelling brand experience that resonates emotionally with consumers.
As KGM continues to evolve, the company is focused on developing electric and hybrid vehicles (like the Korando E-Motion), as well as exploring advanced technologies such as autonomous driving and connectivity. The rebrand serves as a catalyst for this transformation, positioning KGM as a forward-thinking and dynamic automotive brand.
The brand is now focused on a range of SUVs and a pickup truck, with a strong emphasis on design and technology. The lineup includes the popular Musso pickup, available in multiple trims to cater to different needs.
The SUV range comprises models like the Tivoli, Korando, Rexton, and the newly introduced Torres, which is also offered in an electric version.
KGM Motors is also looking ahead with plans for new electric models, including a pickup truck and larger SUVs, indicating a commitment to sustainable mobility.
To further solidify its position as an innovative player in the automotive industry, KGM Motors is actively developing concept cars that showcase its design vision and technological advancements.
