Vauxhall unveils the latest Grandland, a sleek and dynamic SUV that’s both spacious and adaptable, boasting a range of fully electrified drivetrains.
The All-New Grandland introduces several design elements from the Vauxhall Experimental concept car, now realised in a production model. Notable features include the striking 3D Vizor with an illuminated Griffin logo prominently displayed at the centre, along with the continuously lit “VAUXHALL” lettering at the rear. Additionally, standout features encompass the advanced Intelli-Lux Pixel HD lighting system comprising over 50,000 individual elements.
The Grandland Electric also adopts the BEV-native STLA Medium platform and a novel flat battery packaging design, accommodating a sizable 98kWh battery. This configuration promises an impressive range of approximately 435 miles with zero local emissions, as per WLTP provisional data.
The BEV-native platform contributes to achieving an electric range of approximately 435 miles (WLTP) for the next-generation Grandland, marking a significant advancement for Vauxhall in enhancing the appeal of electric mobility. This model becomes the first from Vauxhall to utilise the Stellantis STLA Medium BEV-native platform.
With the adoption of this new architecture, along with the introduction of a flat battery packaging capable of holding up to 98kWh, a next-generation electric motor, and energy-efficient features like the heat pump, the Grandland Electric sets a new standard. It promises a locally emissions-free electric range of around 435 miles (WLTP provisional).
Drivers have the flexibility to select from three levels of regenerative braking using the steering wheel paddles, while rapid charging can replenish the battery to 80% capacity in just approximately 26 minutes.
The revamped underpinnings grant designers newfound freedom, evident in the striking presence of the new Grandland from the outset. With dimensions expanded by 173mm in length, 19mm in height, and 64mm in width compared to its predecessor (Length: 4650mm; Width: 1905mm; Height: 1660mm), the newcomer exudes confidence. Coupled with up to 20-inch alloy wheels, it confidently stakes its position at the helm of Vauxhall’s SUV lineup.
The enhanced grandeur is accentuated by the debut of the signature Vauxhall brand face: the new 3D Vizor, illuminated by Edge Light Technology to elevate the iconic Griffin logo. Embracing the “Vauxhall Compass” design principle, inspired by the Experimental concept car, the Grandland organises its features horizontally within the Vizor, with the Griffin emblem at its heart.
Accompanying the illuminated logo is Vauxhall’s latest lighting innovation – the pioneering Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix HD system. With over 50,000 elements (51,200 precisely, 25,600 on each side), it offers high-definition light distribution, setting a new standard in the industry. The system dynamically adjusts to traffic conditions, precisely illuminating objects for enhanced visibility without dazzling other road users, thereby improving night-time driving comfort. Additionally, welcome, and goodbye animations with graphical projections hint at future possibilities.
Visually elongated with a two-tone floating roof and contrasting cladding, the Grandland exudes a sleek and elegant aesthetic. The structured yet fluid body design, accentuated by sharp wheel-arch feature lines, seamlessly flows through the car.
Complemented by robust cladded elements, the design visually pushes the wheels outwards, enhancing the vehicle’s presence. The spacious cabin and boot benefit from a long wheelbase of 2,784mm and a steep tailgate, facilitating increased roominess. The versatile rear seats, foldable in a 40:20:40 ratio, offer a generous load volume of up to 1,641 litres when folded down, while the boot volume with seats up reaches 550 litres – a 36-litre increase over the outgoing model.
At the rear, the distinctive compass lighting signature, featuring the illuminated ‘VAUXHALL’ wordmark, makes its production model debut. Braking triggers the illumination of the full-width horizontal light bar and vertical third brake light, reminiscent of the current Astra. In alignment with Vauxhall’s Greenovation ethos, the car’s name is now centrally embossed in the tailgate, foregoing traditional chrome lettering.
Inside the new Grandland, occupants are welcomed by bold and refined elements, complemented by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The interior design prioritises a horizontal layout, with lines extending across the instrument panel into the doors, enhancing the sense of spaciousness. The slightly driver-oriented 16-inch central display and elevated centre console contribute to a sporty ambience.
At the helm, a discreet wide digital cluster provides essential information, allowing drivers to focus on the road, aided by the Intelli-HUD head-up display. The Pure Mode option reduces on-screen content, minimising distractions during night or rainy driving conditions. Following Vauxhall’s tradition, frequently used functions like climate control remain easily accessible via physical buttons.
Integrated into the doors, the side air vents visually accentuate the instrument panel’s width. The upper section of the panel boasts a sleek technical finish, divided into two surface textures to enhance the overall design aesthetic. Below, the “edge light,” akin to the Vizor technology, adds a precise glass-like effect of colour and light, complemented by ambient lighting on the panel and door inserts. Wrapped in fabric, the mid-section of the panel seamlessly merges with the door shoulder, crafting a visually appealing and tactile cockpit experience.
The interior of the new Grandland delivers an engaging driving experience, upholding Vauxhall’s renowned reputation for ergonomic comfort with its AGR seats. These seats, certified by AGR (the German “Campaign for Healthier Backs”), introduce a novel feature: powered bolsters, enhancing lateral comfort adjustment through pneumatic pockets in the side bolsters. Additionally, the seats offer ventilation and massage functions for the driver. Rear passengers benefit from 20mm of extra legroom compared to the previous Grandland model. Furthermore, the front seats feature the patented Intelli-Seat feature, relieving pressure on the tailbone for enhanced comfort during long journeys. All interior fabrics are made from 100% recycled materials.
Designed with families in mind, the interior of the Grandland prioritises versatility, incorporating innovative storage solutions. The standout feature is the Pixel Box, which not only adds visual appeal to the console with its illuminated translucent glass and fabric wrapping but also serves a practical purpose. The wireless smartphone charger, positioned behind the glass, allows devices to charge securely while stored, with the smartphone remaining visible to prevent leaving it behind in the vehicle. Overall, the Grandland offers over 35 litres of interior storage compartments, ranging from the Pixel Box to phone pockets in the front seat backrests, and a large storage area under the central console, complete with a 12V socket.
The new Grandland presents a comprehensive range of electrified drivetrains. In addition to the fully electric Grandland Electric, the new Grandland Plug-in Hybrid offers a locally emissions-free range of up to 53 miles (WLTP provisional). Moreover, the Grandland Hybrid utilises 48-volt technology, pairing a 28hp electric motor with a 136hp 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, alongside a new six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Despite its environmentally friendly features, the Grandland maintains its dynamic and comfortable driving experience. This is achieved through dampers equipped with frequency selective damping (FSD) technology, adjusting damping force based on frequency to provide smooth gliding over high-frequency bumps and a sportier feel with direct road contact at low frequencies. The Grandland responds promptly to driver commands, maintaining stability during braking, cornering, and high-speed motorway driving, thanks to specific tuning of springs, anti-roll bars, steering, and ESC.
Completing the package is an extensive suite of driver assistance systems, including Automatic Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Adaptation, and In-Crash Braking to help prevent secondary collisions. The optional Intelli-Drive 2.0 system integrates various electronic assistants with semi-automatic lane-change assist and Recommended Speed Adaptation, facilitating smooth lane changes and automatic speed adjustment in response to new speed limits. Parking and manoeuvring are simplified with front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera with automatic cleaning, and the 360-degree Intelli-Vision camera.
With its advanced platform, innovative technologies, and design elements inspired by the Vauxhall Experimental concept car, the new Grandland leads Vauxhall’s SUV lineup while advancing its electrification strategy.
The All-New Vauxhall Grandland will be available for orders in July, with UK showrooms expecting arrivals this Autumn.
