At the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show, Hyundai Motor Company introduced the INSTER, an all-electric A-segment sub-compact EV that stands out with its unique design, leading driving range, versatility, and advanced technology.
The INSTER features a bold design that merges a futuristic, innovative look with a spacious interior in a small SUV body. Equipped with a sophisticated technology package, the INSTER ensures a safe and refined driving experience, boasting fast charging capabilities and the best all-electric range (AER) in its segment, reaching up to 220 miles.
The Hyundai INSTER offers eco-friendly flexibility, agile driving dynamics, and seamless connectivity. Its compact size enhances efficiency compared to larger models.
Building on the design legacy of the Korea-only, petrol-powered CASPER introduced in 2021, the INSTER features an evolved styling with an extended body and wheelbase, providing more interior space and a rugged road presence.
With its expanded dimensions, the INSTER bridges the gap between traditional A-segment sub-compact city cars and larger B-segment compact models. This positioning offers the manoeuvrability and ease of use buyers expect, along with enhanced practicality and flexibility due to a more spacious interior and improved luggage capacity. Compared to larger models, the INSTER’s compact size makes it ideal for city driving and convenient for parking.
“With the INSTER, we’ve taken the small SUV image to a bold new place for the global audience,” said Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of the Hyundai Design Centre. “The INSTER punches well above its weight with a distinctive design and an interior that maximises its potential in exciting, customer-centric ways. With the INSTER, we’re redefining what it means to drive a sub-compact EV.”
The INSTER’s exterior design is characterised by its robust yet small SUV profile and clean, flush surfaces. Strong fenders, a high-tech, circuit board-style bumper, and a bold skid plate enhance its front and rear designs.
The INSTER’s personality shines through with its LED daytime running lights and pixel-graphic turn signals, tail lamp, and bumpers. Customers can further personalise the car’s appearance with LED projection headlamps and a two-tone exterior featuring a contrasting black roof. Depending on the specification, the INSTER will be offered with either 15-inch steel wheels with covers, 15-inch alloy wheels, or 17-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the INSTER boasts advanced technology and convenience with a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation, and a wireless charging dock integrated into a compact centre console to create a spacious feel.
The pixel theme continues inside, with graphics on the INSTER’s steering wheel boss reinforcing its high-tech image. The interior design also includes customisable upper door trim garnishes, allowing owners to personalise their vehicle further.
The INSTER’s interior offers versatility and spaciousness, featuring walk-through access in the front row. All seats, including the driver’s, can be folded flat for increased flexibility. Options include a front bench seat, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The second-row seats are split 50/50 and can slide and recline.
Exterior colour choices for the INSTER include Atlas White, Tomboy Khaki, Bijarim Khaki Matte, and Unbleached Ivory, along with new hues such as Sienna Orange Metallic, Aero Silver Matte, Dusk Blue Matte, Buttercream Yellow Pearl, and Abyss Black Pearl. Some colours are available in two-tone combinations with a contrasting black roof.
Interior trim options include Black, and Khaki Brown and Newtro Beige two-tone with full cloth trim.
Both the exterior and interior of the INSTER use sustainable materials. The exterior features black high gloss recycled paint, replacing the traditional carbon black pigment with colouring made from recycled waste tyres. Inside, recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from bottles and bio-polypropylene material derived from sugarcane are used.
The INSTER excels with its DC fast charging capabilities and impressive all-electric range (AER), allowing customers to spend less time charging, travel farther, and maximise their energy use.
The INSTER comes standard with a 42-kWh battery, and a Long-Range 49 kWh battery option is available. Both models are powered by a single motor, delivering 71.1 kW (97 PS) in the base variant and 84.5 kW (115 PS) in the Long-Range version, with both providing 147 Nm of torque.
The Long-Range model boasts a segment-leading projected range of 355 km (WLTP) on a single charge, redefining what a small urban EV can achieve with an estimated energy consumption of 15.3 kWh/100 km (WLTP).
At a 120 kW DC high-power charging station, the INSTER can charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes under optimal conditions. It also includes an 11-kW on-board charger as standard, with a battery heating system and high-efficiency heat pump available.
The INSTER features external and internal Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, providing power for external devices (110V/220V) and enabling bi-directional charging without additional equipment. This allows customers to charge or use devices like electric bicycles, scooters, and camping equipment conveniently.
In addition to its impressive driving range and fast charging capabilities, the INSTER offers a host of cutting-edge technology and advanced safety features. Highlights include 64-color LED ambient lighting, a digital cluster, a one-touch sunroof, and Hyundai Digital Key 2 Touch (NFC) accessibility.
This new A-segment sub-compact urban EV from Hyundai boasts the most comprehensive technology package in its segment, featuring an array of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features. These include a Surround View Monitor (SVM), Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist Rear (PCA-R), Blind-spot View Monitor (BVM), and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 1.5 (FCA 1.5).
The INSTER also offers Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA), Safety Exit Warning (SEW), Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop and Go, Highway Driving Assist 1.5 (HDA 1.5), Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), High Beam Assist (HBA), Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA), and Rear Occupant Alert (ROA).
The ADAS Parking System integrates Parking Distance Warning (PDW) Front and Rear with a Rear-View Monitor (RVM) to enhance visibility and ease of parking.
The INSTER will first launch in Korea this summer, followed by releases in Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region. Most equipment and technologies will come standard, with optional enhancements available for added convenience and design. Final specifications will be confirmed closer to the launch date.
A new variant, the INSTER CROSS, will join the INSTER lineup in the future, featuring a more rugged, outdoor-focused design. Additional details about the INSTER CROSS will be announced later.
